Creativity is about process.
The joy of creation doesn’t arrive with completion. If you’re like me, the joy of creation barely arrives at all. As a writer, producer and comedian, the joy of the work doesn’t come in polishing up the piece and then placing it on the mantle to admire, the joy comes in the struggle of creation.
When it's finished, I’m already bored.
My work is about the constant pursuit of discovery in spontaneity and finding new ways to connect. With any luck, once I’ve engaged and captivated you with a joke, I may be able to convince you to come over to my way of thinking. That’s the drug of creativity; connection, persuasion with a healthy dose of validation (however fleeting that feeling may be), and that work is never done.
As a creative producer at The Second City, it was my job to conceive and greenlight projects to be produced on our resident stages in Chicago and with our theatrical partners around the world. In my role, I develop talent, create content and help improvisors to benefit from immediate audience feedback and pivot in an instant to speak to their needs. If the joke doesn’t get a laugh, we cut it! (No need to invest in something that isn’t working.) As a producer I function as the logistic and creative editor and shape what’s funny and what’s not. This allows me to continue to search for new connections and truth each night as the show evolves into the next and best version of itself. This is true for the show, The Second City brand as a whole, and me personally.
As a live event producer during a pandemic, it’s time to re-engage the search for creativity and connection. In the last year, with the theater doors closed for an undetermined amount of time, I branched out to other mediums, creating podcasts, comedy shows via Zoom and more. I will always find a new channel, a new outlet, a new truth to share through my work. While my medium may shift, my need to create, refine and deepen the audience's connection with my work will remain. I want to reach out to engage an audience- make them laugh enough to believe there may be hope for this country after all.
